FIGHT UNTIL DEATH? : Sant Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale, Harchand Singh Longowal, Balwant Ramoowalia,  
and others take an oath  of 'marjeevrays' in front of Sri Akal Takht Sahib 
- to defend the sanctity of Sri Dabar Sahib complex in case it is attacked  by the Indian forces.  
It is reported that 100,000 people took this oath, yet only a handful stood by their word.  


These 'marjeevrays' had sworn to be the first ones to sacrifice their lives if Sri Darbar Sahib was to be attacked. Interstingly many of these 'marjeevrays' did not fight at all, in fact many surrendered. 

WHERE ARE SOME OF THEM NOW?

Many of these ex-marjeevray have become active politicians in Punjab, others have joined the main stream, and are living a comfortable life.   Here are names and details for some of the well known ones:

1. Bhai Manjeet Singh (brother of Shaheed Amrik Singh Ji)
    Dissolved AISSF, joined Akali Dal Badal, active in the Badal Ministry

2. Harminder Singh Gill (brother-in-law of Bhai Manjeet Singh) 
    Dissolved AISSF, joined the Indian National Congress, active in Congress

3. Mohkam Singh (ex-Spokesman Damdami Taksal) 
    Imprisoned, left Mehta Taksal, joined Khalsa Action Committee

4. Rajinder Singh Mehta (close associate of Bhai Amrik Singh - AISSF)
    Along with Chawla, created Sikh Students Federation, joined Akali Dal Badal, and SGPC

5. Amarjeet Singh Chawla  (close associate of Bhai Amrik Singh - AISSF)
    Along with Mehta, created Sikh Students Federation, joined Akali Dal Badal, and SGPC

7. Nirmalbir Singh (Akhand Kirtani Jatha)
    Imprisoned, joined SGPC, active in AKJ Punjab politics

8. Virsa Singh Valtoha (close associate of Bhai Amrik Singh - AISSF)
    Joined Akali Dal Badal, elected MLA from Valtoha.

9. Gurnam Singh Bundala (Panthic Committee)
    Associated with the Panthic Committe, later officially 'killed' and pronounced dead, re-appeared in 2007.

11. Balwant Singh Ramoowalia
    Active politician and current president of Lok Bhalai Party. Elected to Rajya Sabha, and became Union Minister in 1996.

TRUE MARJEEVRAYS:  Members of the Bhinderanwala Jatha, Sikh Students Federation, Babbar Khalsa, Akhand Kirtani Jatha.
Many attained martyrdom during the June '84 attack , others continued to lead the fight against tyranny until their last breath.
